List of Common English Conjunctions

Back to Vocabulary Grammar ESL DESK

Conjunctions are words used as joiners. They connect other words or groups of words. There are conjunctions in this list. Some of these conjunctions can be used as other parts of speech such as adverbs, pronouns and prepositions. Refer to dictionaries for precise meaning and usage.

List does not include correlative conjunctions such as
as ... as,   both ... and,   just as ... so too,   not only ... but also,
not ... but,   either ... or,   neither .. nor,   whether ...or

Usually dictionaries do not have definitions for them but if you look up definition of a specific word (for example: as, either, whether, etc.), you will find examples of proper usage of correlative conjunctions.

I find Merriam-Webster, selected as default under Definitions, to be very good at showing examples on how the same word, depending on the context, can function as different parts of speech.
Cambridge Dictionary, on the other hand, is very helpful listing many common phrases where selected word is used.
